Team TailgateJoe competing in 2012 Great Hot Dog Cookoff

It’s the summer, which for the TailgateJoe crew means a few months to get out of the kitchen and fire up the grill to test new recipes and ideas for next season. It also means it’s time for Joe and Sal to take their hot dog kung fu to Brooklyn to show everyone what time it is in the Great Hot Dog Cookoff!!!

For those of you who haven’t made it out there in the past, this is Team Tailgate Joe’s (code named The Bada BBQ Team) 3rd year in a row competing. In 2010 we saw some great competitors as we took second with our Mexican themed Sanchize Dog in what we felt was a close contest. In 2011 we kicked it up with 81-The Dustin Dog and felt we had the strongest competitor in the field. Unfortunately it turned out to be an ingredient popularity contest as someone entered a Lobster Roll dog and pretty much just won by default due to it being “Lobster,” while we took 2nd yet again. The upside of this was that there were about 23 other chefs, including the guy who beat Bobby Flay in a hot dog throwdown, that we did get over on.

This year Joe and Sal are rewriting the rules of the game! Every topping has been hand selected and will take hours to prepare. The actual hot dog used will be selected from a taste test involving a bunch of brands and sizes. The actual cooking method will be non traditional and totally delicious. We even scoured the tri state area for the perfect bakery bun. This will be the Lord of The Rings dog, the hot dog to rule them all!!
